    Backbone - The segment of a network that the majority of traffic passes through.
    Backplane - An interconnecting device that has sockets for printed circuit boards to plug into
  • Bandwidth - A measure of throughput over time.
    BIOS - Basic Input/Output System
    Bit - Binary digit. The smallest unit of computer storage, a bit is either a 1 or a 0.
    Blade (Server) - A blade server is one which is constructed in a hot-swap chassis and can be added to or removed from a larger frame, without affecting the other blades, to increase (or decrease) computing capacity on the fly.

    DASD - Direct Access Storage Device.
    DAE - Disk Array Enclosure. A chassis that holds a set number of drives for incorporation into an even larger cabinet. Sometimes referred to as a 'Shelf".
    Degraded Mode - A condition that occurs when a disk array sustains the loss of a member drive. The array will continue functioning however with a decrease in performance.
    DES - Data Encryption Standard
    DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

    DLT - Digital Linear Tape.
    DNS - Domain Name Service.
    DPT/RPR - Dynamic Packet transport/Resilient Packet Ring.

    Emulation - Using a piece of software to create a virtual hardware platform.
    EPIC - Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing.
    ESCON - Enterprise Systems Connection. An IBM S/390 fiber-optic data channel.

    FC-AL - Fiber Channel-Arbitrated Loop.
    FDDI - Fiber Distributed Data Interface.
    Fibre Channel - An optical network technology typically implemented in storage networks.
    FICON - Fiber Connectivity. The Fibre based successor I/O protocol to ESCON. Used in IBM mainframes and storage.
    Firewall -
    Firmware - Software that is embedded directly into hardware or an EEPROM chip accessable by the device that depends on it to function.
    FLOP(s) - Floating Point Operation(s).

    ISO - Internetworking Operating System. Operating system for Cisco switches.
    IPv4 - Internet Protocol version 4.
    IPv6 - Internet Protocol version 6.

    Java -
    JBOD - Just a Bunch Of Disks. An array featuring neither redundancy nor I/O performance benefits. Cumulative capacity of all the arrays drives is achieved via cascading or spill-over e.g. when drive 1 is full, data is written to drive 2 etc.

    KB - Kilobyte, 1000 bytes
    Kb - Kilobit, 1000 bits
    Kbps - Kilobits per second

    LPAR - Logical Partition.

    System z - Alternate Branding for IBM S/390 mainframe servers.
